Welcome to my zone 9 garden. My roots are deeply planted in the sandy soil of sub-tropical central Florida, where the summers are long and hot, but the rest of the year is paradise!

Weird Name...Cool Container

A friend...she's a gardener of course...gave me this really cool "hypertufa trough" as a Christmas present. I've seen them in magazines before, and thought they were neat looking but was never interested in having one. But now, everytime I look at it....I absolutely love it! And, of course....yes, I want more.

The look of it reminds me of coquina stone which makes it a natural for the Florida garden. And, this particular trough has been decorated with seashells...a favorite of mine...pressed onto the rim of the container.

Below is a sideview.
She did a wonderful job selecting the succulents which look great in this type of container. So, am I going to try and make some more? You bet! And, you can to with these instructions I found from Fine Living. I guarantee you'll love the results and your new unique faux stone containers.

What a nice gift. The container is neat looking and those succulents are perfect for it. Thanks for the link to the instructions on making the containers. It sounds like I could do it. I'm thinking they would make good Mother's Day gifts.

Susan,
I do like the combination of the hypertufa and the succulents. Her usage of shells sort of reminds me of some of the old houses built in St. Augustine and St. Simon's using shells and sand.

That looks kinda cool. I have a lot of coral pieces from the beach collected after storms here that would look unique on such a planter. This definately is going on my list of things I ought to do one day. Thanks.

Succulents work so well if you have the right container, soil and enough sun. The hypertufa with shells says Florida. I found some others here that are fun.

Kimberly...I wish I could take credit for the succulents, but my friend picked them out. She did a great job as they are really fitting for the container.

Sylvia...They are cool looking and you can make them in many different sizes. Placed together they look really great.

NanaK...I loved receiving it as a gift. It's something you can't buy in a store. I think they would be perfect as a mother's day gift.

Meems...They remind me of the coquina rock they used to build old homes. I think it look very natural in Florida.

Sanddune...Your pieces of coral would be a perfect fit with these containers and would be lovely.

ChrisC...Yes, I'm gonna have to finish my yard work, too before I tackle making one. Perhaps it will encourage me to get my work done faster. :-)

Rick...I noticed some succulents that survived the freezing weather, which is a plus in my book.

Judybec...Hi and welcome. Do post some photos if you decide to make some. I enjoyed visiting your blog and looking at your snow photos. That was quite a storm over the weekend.

Hi Susan ~ Your container is wonderful, especially with those seashells. That was really a lovely gift that you will enjoy for many years to come. The succulents look great in it.

Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment. I appreciate it.

Enjoy the rest of the week and hope you don't lose any plants to this latest bit of cold. It's supposed to get down to around 38 here, so it will be colder for you where you are.

Susan,
Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving comments. I feel like I made a new friend. Where in Central Florida are you?

I just love the succulents also. They are just so unusual and fun to watch.

Flowerlady...I hope the weather stays above 32. I hear we'll be lucky to reach 70 next week. This is turning out to be a real winter. :-(

Maxine...Hi, and thanks for dropping by. I'm located in Lakeland...not too far from the big city. It's fun finding kindred garden spirits who garden in the same zone.
